KOCHI: The Civil Service was nowhere in his childhood ambition list, says Vishnu Venugopal,26, who got the 34th rank in the Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2011.

Vishnu, a Kochiite, says that becoming an IAS officer was not his dream but was only one of the means for him to serve the country. “The primary motivation for me came over a year ago when I was in the US as part of my previous job as a risk analyst with a US-based company. That was when I realised how much our country lags behind in terms of social development. All that was happening in the name of social development was economic growth. That realisation made me think of serving the country and the Civil Service was one of the many ways through which I could achieve that aim. I quit my job, came back to India and got trained at the Kerala Civil Service Academy for some time,” said Vishnu, currently doing a fellowship in Rural Development at Hyderabad.

Although he was not too ambitious to clear the Civil Services exam, Vishnu says that he was confident of getting a decent rank after his interview.

“Now that I have got into the UPSC rank list, I would quit my fellowship and go ahead with Civil Service,” he adds.

After finishing his schooling from Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala, Vishnu went on to get his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Trichy.

Vishnu’s Mother Susheela Venugopal is a retired deputy director of the Department of Industries, Kerala.

Vishnu, whose father N Venugopalan Nair had passed away 12 years ago, has two elder sisters - Vani Rajiv and Veena Rejeesh.
