Strategy for General Studies by Harshika Singh (AIR 8 /CSE 2011)

Strategy for General Studies by  Harshika Singh (AIR 8 /CSE 2011)

General Studies is a very important paper in CSE both in Prelims and Mains. With the changing pattern of the CSE especially in the last 1-2 years , it becomes imperative for each aspirant to be very much updated with the current happenings and news apart from the conventional portion. GS can broadly be divided into two parts-Conventional portion(like History, geography, polity) and Current affairs. For Prelims, GS preparation needs to be widely extensive(i.e. one needs to know something about everything) and for Mains –GS preparation needs to be Intensive as well as understood well ( and also supported by analysis) .

For GS I took study materials fromSmart Foundation,Guwahati, Vision IAS ,delhi,Vajiram and Ravi(Mains course materials) and Brilliant Tutorials(for my first attempt). This helped me to bit more systematize my preparation plan.

The Comprehensive list of books/journals/newspapers and magazines that I followed for the same:

For GS preparation , do keep yourself updated with news (if possible on hourly basis)..In my case, when I was tired of reading conventionally I used to take breaks and watch News like NDTV 24*7, DD news or BBC news. When you are reading /listening some news try to analyze it and relate it in proper context especially for Mains GS.

Strategy for Economics Harshika Singh (AIR 8 /CSE 2011)

Strategy for Economics
Harshika Singh (AIR 8 /CSE 2011)

Why Economics? My Background in Economics and the interest in the subject was the most obvious reason for Economics as my first optional. I am B.A Economics(Hons) from St.Xavier’s College ,Ranchi (Jharkhand) and MSc.Economic History from London School Of Economics and Political Science,London,UK.

The Comprehensive list of the books that I followed was For both my optionals ,I emphasized on making my concepts very clear and re-read the textbooks.I read all the books enumerated below-different books cater to different portions of the syllabus so I have enumerated all of them…

For Paper 1
Ahuja and Koutsyansis
Ahuja
Mankiw
Salvatore basically
and for some random parts
M.C Vaish
Money and banking-
S.B Gupta
Ahuja
RBI website

For Growth and Development ,I followed Mishra and Puri .There is another book by Lekhi (this book covers the syllabus so it is bit handy)/Debraj Ray-Development Economics .I extensively used Internet for some new developments in same.

Paper 2
Indian Economy   from
Extensive study of the Economic Survey
Union Budget
EPW (Economy and Political Weekly)
Any one business newspaper like ET/FE etc
The Economist

In this attempt which was my second attempt I just followed the basic textbooks that are taught in most of the Indian Universities but in general I also kept myself updated with new textbooks and relevant study materials available on Internet of some renowed Universities around the world.
I took study materials from Brilliant Tutorials in my first attempt and RAU’s IAS Academy , Delhi for my second attempt. This helped me to systematize my preparation according to the syllabus.

Answer Writing In Paper 1 , I just ensured that my concepts were clear. Here I would like to admit i felt I had done relatively well in paper 1 but landed up with just 133 marks so maybe I faltered in some way. Hence for Paper 1 , I would recommend to also go through the strategy for the same followed by Neeraj Kumar Singh(AIR-11) who also has the highest marks in Economics optional this year. In Paper 2- I tried to substantiate my answers with adequate data’s and if possible tried to relate the said question to some recent instance /current affairs issue like this year there was a question on MNREGA rural wage hike and agriculture sector(issue on similar lines were in the news recently) .
Economics is my passion so I never considered this as just a subject per se. I enjoyed my economics preparation and religiously followed the day to day developments in world Economy/Indian Economy through Internet /newspapers and News channels.
    Q. Hello Ma'am! Many Congratulations! Could you please tell us how did you find the study material of RAU's IAS Academy? For paper 2 are they updated? Thanks!
  1. harshika:
Thanks for the wishes.. I would say Rau's study materials were so so..I mean i took them because i wanted to have a complete syllabus at one place and if in case some parts of the syllabus could not be found in the textbooks , i could refer to them .I found Brilliant Tutorials study materials better. As for Paper II , Rau's study materials were sort of updated..but in any case i would suggest if Economics is your optional , then emphasise fully on standard text books.

Strategy for Anthropology by IAS HARSHIKA SINGH (AIR 8 /CSE 2011)

Strategy for Anthropology
BY  HARSHIKA SINGH
AIR 8 /CSE 2011

Why Anthropology?

My interest in the subject was the most important reason for selecting Anthropology as an optional.I would request all the aspirants to choose optional based on interest as at the end of the day ,its “YOU” who has to sit with those books for long hours and in course of time have to start “living “ that optional as well.Availability of study materials and a background in biology also helped me in choosing Anthropology as my second optional.

The comprehensive list of Anthropology books that I followed was

Topics                                                      Books

Physical Anthropology                   P.Nath/B.M Das

Social Anthropology                     Ember and Ember
                                                        Makhan Jha
                                                        N.K Vaid
                                                       D.N Majumdar & T.N Madan

Indian Anthropology                   Nadeem Hasnain
V.S Sahay and Pradeep K SIngh

Anthropological thought            Upadhyay   and Gaya Pandey

Extensive use of the internet for keeping myself updated about any new development in the field of anthropology.

I also took study materials from Brilliant Tutorials(in my first attempt) and Vaid IAS academy,Delhi for this attempt. These materials helped me to systematise my study according to the syllabus.

Answer writing in AnthropologyFor paper 1 ,I ensured that my concepts were very clear and i was able to express and substantiate the theories with adequate presentations and eg's ...Use of diagrams wherever feasible also helped me.
For Paper 2-I tried to substantiate many answers of mine with current developments and since i belong to Jharkhand ,i have seen many of the questions asked as "LIVE examples so could add-on there as well..
I tried to re-read the textbooks as i wanted to make my concepts clear and over a period of time i started enjoying the subject very much. There were several questions this year like the one on impact of industrialization on tribals or Impact of Hindu religion on tribals -in such questions i tried to substantiate my answers with some live eg's (like i have always appreciated the fact that tribal population in jharkhand celebrate 'Sarhul" as well as holi/diwali with equal fervor so there has been beautiful enmeshing of customs and traditions )or relate them with some current issues.Over a period of time if you actually start "living " your optional, it no longer remains a mere study or exam's part. Hope this helps.

Questions

Inception

Q.

When and how did the inspiration and idea of joining civil service come in your mind?

The idea of joining the civil services was there from my graduation days. Moreover, my family was always inclined towards a career in civil service for me. Finally, I took the plunge a few years after my Post Graduation

The Choice of Optional Subjects

Q7.After a person decides to appear in civil service exam, the first big obstacle is “Choice of optional subjects”. What factors did you consider before selecting your optional?

I was always clear on my Optional Subjects – Public Administration and Anthropology. The easy availability of coaching and material for these subjects in Hyderabad was the prime reason.

Momentum

Q. People initially prepare with much enthusiasm but then a boredom phase appears. How did you sustain the study-momentum throughout this journey?

I agree that boredom is bound to set in, especially when the exam process itself takes one long year. In my case, since I was married, I had added responsibilities. I used to relax by spending time with my family or going out for a movie on weekends. Also meeting friends with whom you can discuss/share your views also used to rejuvenate me after a constant phase of study.

Hours

On an average, How many hours did you study per day? How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of GS and optional subjects?

On an average, I prepared for 6-7 hours per day. The core syllabus of GS took me about 5 months to complete. Public Administration and Anthropology were mostly done after Prelims (4 months), although I attended coaching for a part of these subjects before the Prelims.

Internet

How did you use computer and internet for your exam-preparation?
By and large, I stuck to books and newspaper (The Hindu) for my mains preparation. Only for a few miscellaneous areas in Optional subjects, I checked up on websites.
For the interview, both for the probable questions on my bio-data and current affairs I used internet a lot for preparation.

Essay

How did you prepare yourself for the essay?

I did not prepare separately for the Essay. I did read some articles on how to structure a good essay. Regarding content, the preparation for GS was sufficient to help me write a good Essay.

Which Essay did you write in Mains-2011?

On Small states

What were your keypoints in that essay?

I gave a balanced viewpoint mentioning both the pros and cons of smaller states. I quoted some provisions of the constitution and current examples for the same.

How many marks did you get in that essay?

I scored 125 Marks in the essay.

Profile

I feel that profile can be the basis for asking questions during interview. It is a matter of luck as to how much of the interview will be based on that. There are cases where almost nothing was asked from the profile. So from our end, whatever the profile, being prepared on the same is the least that we are expected to do.

How do you rate your own profile?

I felt that I had a good profile having worked both in India and UAE as a Sales Manager. On the hobbies and extra-curricular activities, I felt that I didn’t have anything significant.

How much portion of your interview centered on your profile?

My interview started off with the Chairman asking questions on my work experience. Post that, a couple of members also asked me questions on my profile. So roughly, about 50% of the interview centered on my profile.

Did they ask any uncomfortable questions from your profile?

No

Backup

QIn case you had not cleared the UPSC exam, what was your career/future backup plan?

The backup plan was to get back to Corporate world.

Working professional

What is your advice and tips to working professionals – particularly on time Management?

I quit my job to prepare for the exam so can’t give any advice on this.

Family and Friends

Q. Behind one topper are many people who stood by him/her during those uncertain times when he/she was merely an ‘aspirant’. Would you like to tell the world, who were those people in your case?

My entire family, especially my wife and mother, stood by me during the long journey.

  1. Public Administration – Polinaidu
  2. New Horizons of PA – Mohit Bhattacharya
  3. Braintree Coaching Material
  4. Class Notes from Coaching (Hyderabad Study Circle)
  5. Yojana Magazine and The Hindu Newspaper

The first 4 Chapters are very important in Paper 1. A very good understanding is needed on the crux of what each thinker has said. I tried to quote thinkers wherever it was relevant and tried to give current examples. For Paper 2, since the paper will be very general one needs to quote from various sources like Constitution, 2nd ARC Reports, Current examples etc. Personally, I couldn’t do 2nd ARC reports due to lack of time but found them to be good during my Interview preparation.

Although I expected a score of around 330 in Pub Adm, I ended up only with 254 marks (148+106). I would put it down to bad luck.
Anthropology
  1. Physical Anthropology – P Nath
  2. Anthropology – Ember (Selectively)
  3. BrainTree and Muniratnam Sir’s Material
  4. Class Notes from Coaching Institute
I relied primarily on material available in the market and did text books only selectively. For Paper 1, it is advised that diagrams be drawn in the exam for Physical Anthro part, although I couldn’t do that due to lack of time. Ember is good for Human evolution and Socio-cultural Anthro but did only selectively as it is not exam-oriented. For Paper 2, I relied only on Class notes and printed material of Target IAS.

Interview

How did you prepare for the interview?

My preparation was primarily on my bio-data. I listed out the probable questions from the bio-data and prepared on them. In addition to this, I read Newspaper regularly and brushed through all the relevant Yojana Magazines during that period.

Who was the chairman of your interview board?

Mr. IMG Khan

Was your interview on the expected lines of what you had prepared or did they ask you totally unexpected questions?

It was on the expected lines of my preparation.

What was the toughest question you faced during the interview and how did you answer it?

I did not face any question of such type.
